Paul Morris Segal shares some tips to make sure your first date leads to a second. You took the risk, plucked up the courage to ask them out and now the your faced with the big scary question – what to do on the first date? Creativity counts When it comes to the ultimate first date, actions speak louder than words so be creative and take the time to think the date through. The date your partner will remember won’t necessarily be the most original, but the one that shows you’ve given consideration to what they might like. Guys, it doesn’t matter how good looking you are, or how much money you’ve got in the bank. If she’s terrified of heights and you take her rock climbing you’re date is going to go pear shaped and she won’t be back for seconds. Girls, don’t drag him out to a ‘chick flick’ and dinner with your parents, unless you’re sure he’d be into it. Getting to know you Use the ‘get to know you’ phone call before the first date. Pick up the phone, have a chat and listen for clues. Information gathering can also be done via SMS or on-line. Given half the chance, many people will tell you their life story 5 minutes into the first phone call. So find out a bit about what makes them tick, their likes and dislikes and plan your date around your new inside information. If your perspective partner loves the outdoors plan a picnic near a river, complete with champagne, strawberries, chocolates, a thick blanket and afternoon hike (just don’t forget the contingency plan in case of rain). Romance by Candlelight A global study ‘Real People, Real Answers, Real Stories’ with over 1,000 participants, asked women what their favorite fantasy first date was. The common factor was candlelight, with women voting a romantic dinner or drink by candlelight as their number one fantasy. So, where appropriate, choose a location with lots of candlelight, the dimmer the better. Great first date ideas: Mini golf – again, check for interest first Bar – Remember to choose a dimly lit bar with lots of comfy couches.
